Avarca Tela de Llenguës

The Avarcas Tela de Llenguës:
A touch of authenticity - Mallorcan fabric revisits the Avarca

The Avarcas Tela combine authenticity and artisanal tradition. These iconic sandals, originally from Menorca, are adorned for the first time with the famous Majorcan fabric.

The story of Tela de Llenguës

Tela de Llengües originated in Mallorca, where over the centuries it has become a symbol of local textile heritage.

This fabric is the result of an ancestral dyeing technique called ikat, introduced to Mallorca between the 13th and 18th centuries via trade routes connecting Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

Local artisans adapted it with their own expertise, giving rise to a unique and timeless aesthetic.

Long used in the interior decoration of Mallorcan homes (curtains, tablecloths, cushions), Tela de Llengües embodies the alliance between tradition and refinement, and continues today to inspire contemporary craftsmanship and fashion, like our Avarcas Tela sandals!

Manufacturing method

The artisanal method of Ikat involves dyeing the warp or weft threads before weaving, binding them with waterproof ties to prevent the dye from penetrating certain parts of the yarn.

This process creates the characteristic blurred patterns of Mallorcan canvas, resembling flames or tongues, hence the name “llenguës,” which give each piece a unique appearance.

Once the threads are dyed, they are carefully arranged on the loom to form the final pattern.

This work requires precision, patience, and great skill, as the result depends as much on the dye as on the weaving.

Entirely handmade in only three traditional Mallorcan workshops: Teixits Riera, Teixits Vicens, and Bujosa Textil, each canvas tells a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and Mediterranean cultural identity.

Minorquines & the Tela de Llenguës

For this collection, Minorquines commissioned the sublime Tela de Llengües, made by the Textil Bujosa workshop. Located in Santa Maria del Camí since 1949, it is one of the last three workshops to preserve the ancestral know-how of producing this iconic fabric. The fabrics all feature the traditional design and are available in blue, purple, mauve, and pink.
