What you need to know about Menorca...
… Menorcan horses

The Menorcan horse breed dates back nearly 7 centuries, when the Catalan king Jaime II of Menorca wanted to create a cavalry for war mounted on agile, manoeuvrable, fast and supple horses. To achieve this, he crossed the small black horses native to the island with Spanish horses and Arab thoroughbreds.
Menorcan horses are deep black and eumetrical (very well proportioned).
They have the particularity of doing the « bôt »: once reared, they can walk on their hind legs. Spectacular!
Horses are generally the main protagonists of the patron saint fiestas, which are very important in Menorca, starting on 25 June in Ciutadella (fiestas de la Sant Joan) and ending on 8 September in Mahon (fiestas de Gracia).
Finally, Menorca is also said to have the most horses per square metre in Europe (all breeds combined).
